Nearly 100 "Hamas" appeared in Qinghai, with white lips and short tail

Located in the Sanjiangyuan area in the south of Qinghai Province in my country, it is known as the "China Water Tower" and is one of the areas with the most abundant water resources in the world. Because it is located in the hinterland of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and is less disturbed by the outside world, the Sanjiangyuan area is also one of the areas with the highest concentration of high-altitude biodiversity in the world. Countless "exotic animals" thrive here, and there are as many as 85 species of wild beasts, including Tibetan antelope, wild yak, snow leopard, white-lipped deer, blue sheep, golden eagle and many other national key protected animals, which are the most important in my country. One of the natural germplasm resource banks of alpine organisms. The Sanjiangyuan area is dominated by mountainous landforms, with long mountains and complex topography. It has various types of ecosystems and nurtures a variety of organisms. Recently, the staff found a large number of white-lipped deer in the Sanjiangyuan area in Maqin County, Qinghai Province, and the number reached nearly 100. They gather in the hinterland of a snow-capped mountain at an altitude of 4,400 meters, sometimes foraging leisurely, sometimes looking up alertly, sometimes running and playing, the scene is very spectacular. The local special glacial landforms and plant distribution provide a suitable living environment for these white-lipped deer, where they thrive for generations, presenting a picture of natural harmony.

White-lipped deer, short tail, tall body, called "Hama" in Tibetan

The white-lipped deer is a member of the deer family and the genus Deer They are tall and large, with an adult weight of 130-200 kg, a shoulder height of 120-130 cm, and a body length of 100-210 cm. The shape looks similar to the red deer, but the body is not as big as the red deer, and slightly smaller. The white-lipped deer, as its name suggests, has a white mouth that extends from the lower lip to the upper throat and sides of the mouth. The color of the hair on the body is mainly yellowish brown, and the hair on the abdomen is lighter, which is light yellow. Their tails are the shortest among large deer, only 10-15 cm long. The white-lipped deer is a precious special animal in my country. It is mainly distributed in Qinghai, Gansu, western Sichuan, and eastern Tibet. It is a species endemic to the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. In Tibetan, the white-lipped deer is also called "Hama". This is an ancient species whose fossils have been found in some geological layers of the late Pleistocene. Once widely distributed in the central Himalayas, but later affected by the "orogenic movement" and other influences, the distribution range of the white-lipped deer has continued to shrink eastward. Today, the distribution of white-lipped deer is island-shaped, and it is difficult to communicate with each other.

Live in groups, mostly at high altitudes

Most ungulates are more gregarious and like to live in groups. White-lipped deer are no exception. They are highly social and live in groups. Usually in groups of three or five, there are also a dozen or so, and the members of larger deer herds can even reach 100-200. The groups formed by the white-lipped deer can be divided into three types, namely: male groups composed of male deer, female groups composed of female deer and cubs, and mixed groups composed of males, females, young and old. Among them, the size of the male group is the smallest, and the number of members is limited, generally no more than 8. Female herds and mixed herds are more common in nature and are the main manifestation of white-lipped deer herds. White-lipped deer are typical high-altitude species. Their main activity space is alpine meadows and shrub meadows at an altitude of 3,500-5,100 meters. They especially like to move near the treeline, so that they can migrate to different habitats. Due to the grazing phenomenon in many grasslands on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, it is occupied by livestock such as yaks, sheep and goats. To avoid these livestock and avoid human contact, white-lipped deer move seasonally, tending to move to higher altitudes. Because domestic livestock cannot live in areas above 5,000 meters above sea level, this gives the white-lipped deer a relatively undisturbed space.

The male beast has long horns, so he dares to confront the snow leopard in a hurry.

Like many deer animals, the white-lipped deer has obvious two states, male and female, and the male beast has a Long horns, while females do not have this feature. The horns are very important for male white-lipped deer. When they are in heat, they will become fierce and excited, and fights often break out between the same kind. The two sides fought fiercely, and the competition was fierce, and the horns were often broken. But it doesn't matter, because their horns can be regenerated. As an ungulate animal on the plateau, the white-lipped deer has many natural enemies, such as snow leopards, wolves, jackals and so on. Under normal circumstances, the white-lipped deer would run away from predators such as snow leopards. But if forced to a dead end, the white-lipped deer would dare to confront the snow leopard head-on. Because the male beast is large and has horns, even a snow leopard would not dare to rashly fight with it. In April 2020, people photographed the phenomenon of white-lipped deer running against snow leopards in the Sanjiangyuan area. On the morning of April 15, three forest rangers from Daiqu Village, Bagan Township, Qumalai County were patrolling the mountains and found two snow leopards confronting a tall male white-lipped deer, so they hurriedly took pictures down. I saw that on a steep hillside, two snow leopards were contemplating how to capture the white-lipped deer, but what the staff did not expect was that things unexpectedly reversed. The white-lipped deer bravely confronted the snow leopard, constantly using its horns as a weapon to attack the snow leopard. In the end, the snow leopard chose to flee under the pressure of possible injury. Every October-November is the estrus season of the white-lipped deer. At this time, the bucks will become more restless and often neigh loudly to attract the attention of the opposite sex. The gestation period of the white-lipped deer is about 8 months. There is often only one cub per litter, and a few can give birth to two, so the reproductive ability is not very strong. In the past, due to habitat destruction and other reasons, the population decreased, but now with the gradual improvement of the ecological environment, dozens or hundreds of deer herds have become more and more common.
